We are excited to announce that our field trips are now open for registration!

Come explore the natural wonders and history of the Maritime provinces, a region shaped by wind and waves. Experience the Bay of Fundy, home to the world's highest tides, travel into the past at Joggins’ Fossil Cliffs, or tour Canada’s island paradise! Deadline to register is June 30th.

All trips are scheduled for the field trip day: Wednesday August 14th, 2024

  • Visit Canada’s smallest province with this field trip to Prince Edward Island. We will first stop at the Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Area, which is a complex of coastal wetlands and forest that is home to over 170 species of birds. It also provides views of the 12.9 km Confederation Bridge to PEI. We will then travel the bridge to PEI, and visit PEI National Park, which is a large beach complex bordering the Atlantic Ocean. We will also visit the Green Gables Heritage House, and enjoy sightseeing at various locations along the way.

    Minimum: 30 people

    Limited registration of 54 people

    Cost: $145 CAD

The cost does not include lunch; if you are on the conference meal plan, you can ask for a bagged lunch, otherwise it is best to plan to bring your own food as options will be limited at our destinations.

  • This trip will offer birding and walking opportunities at Amherst Point Migratory Bird Sanctuary, where you are likely to see a good variety of waterfowl, warblers and more. Bald Eagles and Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are among the 228 species documented in this location. Interpretive trails wind through marsh and forest habitat, and alongside the river, and offer an easy hike as you bird. This trip will then go to Joggins’ Fossil Cliffs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which overlooks the Bay of Fundy. Enjoy a tour at Joggins’ that explains the prehistoric fossils visible in the cliffs and tours the area. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Fort Beausejour National Historic Site, which played a crucial role in the rivalry between France and Britain in North America. On the way back, we will stop at Trueman Blueberry Farms where you can sample this Maritime staple via ice cream, baked goods or other treats.

    Minimum: 30 people

    Limited registration of 54 people

    Cost: $105 CAD

  • Visit three locations on the Bay of Fundy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the world's largest tides. We will have an early start to reach Mary’s Point Shorebird Discovery Centre close to high tide, and hopefully see some of the large shorebird flocks for which the bay is famous. We will then head to Fundy National Park, where we will have the opportunity to visit the mud flats and surrounding areas and learn more about the bay. Finally, we will go to Hopewell Cape Provincial Park, which is famous for its fantastical rock stacks and arches.

NOTES FOR ALL TRIPS

All trips will involve some light to moderate walking, including on uneven surfaces, so appropriate footwear is needed. Temperatures during August can vary, especially along the coast of the Bay of Fundy, from 10°C with wind, fog or rain to 30°C with sun and high humidity. We recommend bringing layers, including wind and rain gear in case of cool weather, and hats and sufficient water to stay hydrated in case it’s hot. Water may be purchased at some locations, but please bring plenty. Ticks that carry Lyme disease are possible in all areas, and we recommend wearing long pants and close-toed shoes. We also recommend bringing bug spray and sunscreen. The cost does not include lunch; if you are on the conference meal plan, you can ask for a bagged lunch, otherwise it is best to plan to bring your own food as options will be limited at our destinations.

Most trips are planned to departure around 7:00 and return at 17:00. Details will be given closer to the conference.
